World Oceans Day 2025

June 8th is World Oceans Day. It is celebrated annually to focus on the importance of the ocean and the importance of our actions have on it. From oil spills to pollution, human actions can have a massive impact on the ocean.

According to National Geographic, “Because water absorbs and loses heat more slowly than land masses, the ocean helps balance global temperatures by absorbing heat in the summer and releasing it in the winter. Without the ocean to help regulate global temperatures, Earth’s climate would be bitterly cold.” The ocean has way more value than helping us travel to various places via boat or a good seafood boil. It has an ecosystem that impacts our livelihood.

World Oceans Day was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to raise awareness about the important role the ocean plays in our lives and how we can protect it.

The 2025 theme is Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us. While the theme changes every year, the proposal of the 1992 Earth Summit can still be seen in the foundation of World Oceans Day; we have one Earth with many oceans that are all connected. We must respect the ocean and all of the gifts it gives us. What we do matters.
