What is World Environment Day?
It is celebrated on June 5th every year, focusing on a different environmental issue. The idea was first proposed by the United Nations General Assembly at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. It was first celebrated in 1974 with the theme, “Only One Earth”. With the ongoing issues of global warming and the effects of climate change rippling throughout the world, environmental issues should be something that we should all be thinking about. The ozone is continuing to deplete. The icebergs melting. The average temperature is rising in nearly every continent.
These are all things that impact us. We should all care. While it may seem daunting, we can always do something to make a difference. Change, no matter how small, is still change.
How do I celebrate World Environment Day?
Get involved. The 2024 theme is #landrestoration, #desertification, and #droughtresilience. You can choose to follow along with the current theme and their movement through https://www.worldenvironmentday.global/, or you can focus on environmental issues within your community.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will host World Environment Day 2024, focusing on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems worldwide, which is critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
