But how far in advance do travelers to Japan typically book their gourmet reservations? Well. According to our partners at byFood, it really depends on WHERE in the world you are coming from.
Did you know? Travelers from Canada book nearly four weeks in advance, while bookings from China come in under 10 days, according to an analysis of 12,914 confirmed reservations.

New byFood data shows when international travelers book restaurants in Japan How far in advance do YOU book a restaurant reservation in Japan?
A new analysis by byFood.com found a global median booking window of 19 days, with clear differences between source markets.
The analysis covers 12,914 confirmed restaurant reservations made by travelers from 115 countries. The market comparison focuses on 22 countries and regions with at least 100 confirmed bookings each.
Together, those markets account for 11,822 reservations, or 92% of the full sample.
Some markets plan weeks earlier than others
Travelers from Canada had the longest median booking window at 25.8 days, followed by Israel at 25.2 days. Australia and the Netherlands both recorded a median of 21.6 days.
The shortest window was among travelers from China, at 9.4 days. Bookings from Japan had a median lead time of 11.2 days, followed closely by South Korea at 11.3 days. Overall, the gap between Canada and China was 16.4 days.
Fun Fact: Sushi is King!
Sushi was the most-booked cuisine in 21 of the 22 displayed markets. Indonesia was the only exception, with Wagyu in the top position. Looking at cuisines with a higher-than-average share adds more detail:
South Korean bookings leaned toward okonomiyaki, Taiwan toward sukiyaki, China toward washoku, and Hong Kong toward French dining in Japan.
